Blackmore & Langdon's Open Days
& Sale Weekend  2017

7th.  8th. &  9th. May

.

The annual open day and Chelsea RHS preview took place over the weekend commencing 5th May.  This is an opportunity to view possible plants that will be on B&L’s exhibit at Chelsea and also pickup some choice begonia varieties at special rates.

Co-incidentally, the previous weekend Rosemary Langdon gave a fascinating and enthralling talk to the South West members of the NBS on the history of B&L from its inception way back in 1901 through to the present time. The relocation of the nursery to Pensford took place after World War two when the greenhouses took a direct bomb hit.  The fields, where incidentally begonias used to be grown in the open,  was compulsory purchased by the council for housing.

While John and Rosemary take a back sit so to speak these days the business is now run by  their sons, Nick, Simon and Stephen, who continue to promote begonias not only in the UK but worldwide.

For the last two years delphiniums have struggled to make a real showing at Chelsea due to the cold weather.  This year, the plants are not in a heated greenhouse but moved to c cool on.  They look superb.

The same can be said of the begonias.  With a couple of weeks to go before Chelsea there should be some good plants to enhance their display.  What struck me was that beside the glossy verdant foliage a large number of the plants had no stakes and stood up ramrod straight.  Also, there were a number of seedlings that showed great potential.     How long will it be before some of these are available to the general public?

We wish B&L every success at Chelsea where with a judging panel to impress, not a sole judge, it is a difficult task.   Of note is that all the plants on the exhibit are grown by B&L: there are no “buy ins” not even for the fill in plants and ferns.  This is not taken into account by the panel.  Pity.
