Message from the NBS National Show Secretary

I had an email today from Shrewsbury to say they received an entry from an exhibitor entered as Mr & Mrs, not sure who but they cant really cater for that with the exhibitor receiving the show passes they would only get 1 pass per day not 2.

A member's letter to our Chairman Ian rhys Williams

I saw Ralph’s photo on the NBS web page. It was with some sadness to see my dear friend Ralph lying in bed. My mind wanders back just a time ago when the phone would ring. Usually my wife would answer it and say ‘’ Roy that man with the happy voice is on the phone’’. Now that was almost every week I’d get to talk to Ralph always about how am I then onto our begonias. A smashing smashing guy what more could you want from a friend, how I wish him well. He has got to fight this terrible affliction slowly with willpower.
I know a guy who was struck down with a severe stroke way back in June1989. Which left him paralytic down his right side. No control over his speech or movement down that side, he knew what was going around him. But had no way to converse, but then he came up with the idea by making a sign with his left hand that he could write. His wife got a pen and paper and the first word he wrote was TOILET. His wife said she could get a bottle, he wrote NO WALK, she said you can’t, he said ‘’ I WILL ON ONE LEG.’’ And so with the curtains closed around the bed with his wife holding him under his right arm he started to hop down the ward. He was stopped by the nurse but insisted he would get to the toilet, which he did. A year later he had his left jugular opened up and cleaned to remove a blockage. Then in 1992 he underwent a quadruple heart bypass where it was also found he had asbestosis in both lungs. Then to add insult to his infliction in 2010 it was discovered that the right diaphragm was also raised. So again he went into Guys to have placation of the right hemi diaphragm, in laymen’s words stitched down. To this day he has no feeling in his right arm and limited feeling to right side of face. I think Ralph is a couple of years younger than the guy I am writing about. He also joined the Begonia Society just before you Ian, he also forecast that you will do well in the Society. Yes Ian, that person is the writer of this letter. Ralph must not give up, he has got to give himself goals to achieve. I wish him well, I really do. Those same good wishes go to you and your wife.

                                                                  Yours sincerely

Roy Seare [the soft southerner].

Footnote: I love the Begonia Society but know I will never aspire to great heights for I also lost my left index finger back in 1970. And the reason the right lung was out of action is doing the bypass they accidentally severed the frenetic nerve to the diaphragm.                           Keep smiling…Roy.
