		2018Obituary - Len Gill

It was with sadness that I heard that Len Gill had died last Wednesday,
28th. March, 2018.We all knew that Len hadn't been enjoying good health during the last
year or two, however, I had recently spoken to Len several times, as he
wanted a few tubers to start growing again. He sounded well and was
eager to get his tubers started in the spring.
The last time I spoke to Len, was a few weeks ago, when he phoned me to
say that his tubers had arrived safely.

Len was an ex-miner and a Royal Marine, two of the hardest occupations
anyone could do.Len was The N B S Chairman for many years until 2012; when ill health
prevented him carrying on that role.
I often referred to Len as a principled man- that he surely was.

		Ian Rhys Williams.

		.....................................................................................................
		From Derek L Telford
On the eve of the 2nd of April my phone
rang and I was informed that my long time friend Len had passed away..He had been suffering several illnesses for a long time and I always
included him in my prayers each night.
Over the years we traveled together to all
of the shows. and we gave many talks to societies.
He often called at my home  and being a miner my wife Jeannie (being a
miner's daughter) - always gave him a warm welcome.
He had been a Royal Marine in action.

One winter he cut his hand on a glass
greenhouse and he had to go to hospital to have it dressed. The result
was he that lost All of his tubers in the frost.Needless to say I fixed him up with some more to get started again. That
		really cemented our friendship.
Such was the tenor of the man. he had KINDNESS. which he evinced over
		the following years.
He was a keen ballroom dancer with regular partners but I never saw him
dance. However I am sure that he was an excellent one.

		God
		Bless
		Derek

Society Chairman Len Gill presented Derek L Telford with his Gold Medal
Award for outstanding services to the Society. Derek has been bulletin editor for many years.
 In
Derek's own words:    "It is beautiful and I am truly
overjoyed by the honour which the NBS have conferred on me.
It is a mixture of feelings which assail me as I gaze at it on the side
of my desk. In particular I glow with the feeling that it comes from my
		friends."
Congratulations Derek on behalf of all the members in our Society. |

      | Spring Meeting.  Saturday
15th. April  2006A well attended meeting, more in fact than I could include in the
attached pictures.  A full discussion on the new show format and its
requirements took the initial part of the meeting  I was pleased to inform
that we were lucky to have secured total sponsorship for the show
with the Victoria Garden Centre [Featherstone], Bag Hill Nurseries, Michelle's Flower arrangements,
GT Handcraft, Ironwork Fabrications, and last but not least the venue
		itself sponsored by
Thorneycroft Resource Centre. All the  sponsors come from Pontefract.
This was followed by a demonstration by
		Envirolite Energy saving
solutions for the growing world. This generated sufficient interest for 8 members
to order units, I have made arrangements for a members discount and
also for the units to be collected at
our area show thus saving postage.  I understand
Envirolite are attending the Birmingham Gardeners
World  Show at the N.E.C. they will be at stand no. 6136.  If ordering or purchasing at the show
ask for National Begonia Society discount.
The final part of the meeting followed our buffet and consisted of
a question and answer session, this was most
informative particularly for the new members attending.  The panel
consisted of D.Telford,  M.Watson Of Bellcross and last but not least J.
		Larter.
Our next meeting will be inclusive of the open day at Bellcross
		on Saturday1st
July, could any attendees please give Margaret the courtesy of a call
		for refreshment requirements.

      | Area Show  2006As mentioned in the Society Bulletin the Leeds Show is moving to a new
venue, St Chads. They cannot accommodate the Society's Classes and as a
result we have had to make alternative arrangements for this year's
Show.  It will be at our Meeting Venue at Pontefract which has
excellent all round facilities.  The dates are Saturday 29th
		& Sunday 30th July

      Spring
      Meeting.  Saturday 16th. April
2005.The venue now known as Thorneycroft has seen a major refurbishment and
members certainly appreciated it.  All the comforts of a starred
hotel and the young lady [Karen], a member of the staff, kept quenching
our thirst with a continuous supply of tea & coffee included in the
      buffet.
The slides on show were mainly depicting a good old begonian Bertie
Cruickshank, a perfectionist in his horticulture.  Among many of his
hybrids the one he named after his wife still reigns supreme both as a cut
bloom or pot plant.  Also attending were Bellcross Nursery with a
variety of plants which were snapped up by eager members.
Our next Meeting, on Saturday 23rd. July will again include a
mini show with 1 cut bloom 1 restricted pot, and at this time 1
foliage plant, please check the next bulletin for further details
