NOVEMBER
Its getting closer to the end of the season, and with the shade house
at bursting point (A) mid October, I was a little concerned. Thankfully
we have only had one frost up to mid November. It's amazing how quickly
leaves start to fall from the plants (B). Sometimes the plants look as if
they still have plenty of foliage on the plant as can be seen on the
next couple of pictures. Late basal growth can mask the loss of lower
leaves on the plant (C,D). Looking at the plant now shows me its now time
to cease watering (E). Now is the time to help the plant into its final
stage before storage for the winter. The plant is now reduced to help it
on its way, before harvest time (F). The early cuttings are also starting
to show signs with leaves turning yellow & falling
(G). The only thing I
do with the cuttings is to leave them in their pots till its time to
start them off again next year.
Most of the cuttings are still growing quite well in the greenhouse
(H).
A few plants are starting to show signs of mildew, (I) these will be
treated due to the fact that I want to keep the cuttings going and be able
to take a few late leaf cuttings. Seed pods are starting to ripen
(J)
although some of the pods fell from the plants before they were ripe I
still hopefully will have enough seed for next year
(K).
With the plants
now quickly going to rest more room becomes available to move about
(L). Another 2 weeks later most of the stems have fallen
(M,N). The
end of the month I will start to remove some of the compost and start to see
what stock I want to keep. Next month will also be the time I reflect on
my year and a list of varieties to grow for showing only. |
