 This  was
the most successful show in the Area’s short history since the first
event held in 1996. There were record entries and for the first time
there were over 100 begonias on display. This included 48 blooms, 24
pots and a number of foliage plants backed up by an outstanding 7

That doyen of pots, Lakin Earl, from Highbridge, Somerset, took
pride of place with his 3 pot entry, which was judged best exhibit
in show, that included a truly outstanding Jennifer Wilson.
However, the overall point’s winner was David Payne from
Kingsteignton, Devon, with entries of pots and blooms, including a
stunning Coppelia, awarded best bloom, in his winning 3 board entry.
John Chiswell, from Midsomer Norton, Somerset, exhibiting at
Bideford for the first time, took the accolade for the 6 board.
The only disappointment on the day was that so few non exhibiting
NBS members came along. This was great pity as our judge, Dave
Coates, gave so much time to all in his tips on growing and showing.
The upside was that there was a steady trickle of visitors to the
Pannier Market which is unusual. Many bought 2008 cuttings from the
hastily erected Area stand that sold out.

Mike Avis, our hard working Show
Manger, has already scheduled next year’s event for
			Sunday 9th. August 2009.
