SHOW
SECRETARY'S REPORT
Show News from the South West.
Once again its good to
report that 2013 was a very good show season down here in North
Devon. There were good exhibits in Tuberous, non-tuberous and
Foliage Begonias at most of the main local shows.
The Bideford Cacti & Pot
Plant Club Show was moved to the 3rd. Sunday in August to
avoid other shows, and that really proved a good move. Entries were
good in pot classes for Begonias with an average of 4 per class, and
only the novice class not achieving any entries, a total of 80 pots
and 4 baskets, however Cut Blooms were a bit down with just 44
blooms staged. The recent extremes of temperature have destroyed the
chances of many would be exhibitors, including some well known
growers, such as John Chiswell, Dave Payne and Wally Lloyd
We were however
delighted to see continued support of exhibitors from South Wales,
Wiltshire and North Somerset who made the long trip to exhibit. Some
faced 5 hour journeys both ways with motorway problems. It’s great
to see top class exhibits travelling to our show and we welcome the
competition. There were some very good exhibits in both pot and cut
blooms and the NBS rosettes went to very worthy winners. The best
pot rosette and bronze medal went to Ian Rhys Williams our new NBS
Chairman with a pot of Rocheart in the class for 3 Begonia Rex, he
was also awarded the best exhibit in the South West NBS Show for the
1st prize exhibit in the same class. In the cut blooms, it was a
return to show by Derek Bonner with a Falstaff in his 6 bloom entry,
I have to thank all
those who staged for their support, with Ken Davis coming to us for
the first time with cut blooms and taking the single bloom first
prize as well as staging some very good exhibits in the other
classes.
Thanks to Andrew
McDougall for judging the NBS Begonia section for us. It was good to
welcome him back to our show again and as always his judging was
excellent.
