JANUARY
The 23rd
Dec and winds blowing and the rain coming down but all ok in the green
house checking the cuttings which are still in the propagator. About ten
pots were empty and no tubers to be found but not to worry I harvested
about twenty after all the tops had fallen off and roughly thirty of
autumn and spring cuttings are still growing steadily. The spring taken
cutting tubers are a good size and should make good plants this next
season .The autumn cuttings are very small and these will need starting
only after a short rest period and once rooted and potted into 5”pots
growing without flowering ready for the 2015 season.
The 4th Jan visited the garden centre and purchased four
bags John Innes number 2 and two bags of Sinclair’s 75 ltr potting
compost. Three bags of potting grit, one smoke candle and for the first
time some armillatox to wash pots etc. Went into the pound shop and got
four packs of fleece guess how much they were ha ha so later on I can
replace the existing covering the greenhouse vents. I did miss covering
the side louver auto vent last year and had some caterpillar damage and
found half a dozen chomping at the cuttings under the benches.
Harvested about another ten small tubers from the propagator on 4th
Jan and have carried on harvesting and about 20 cuttings still growing
on today 21st Jan.
I’m waiting for the weather to warm up before I start cleaning up the
greenhouse and equipment.
Next month should see more activity and when the season starts.
